When you’re choosing your deck color or colors, consider both your climate and the exterior of your home. Things to Consider When Choosing a Deck Color If you have superior DIY skills or you’ve hired a professional contractor, you can use two or more colors to create a gorgeous herringbone pattern or another style of design that weaves together multiple hues. You may also want to think about combining colors with your composite deck boards. (We’ll talk more about the role of home and environment below.) It’s these undertones that will help your deck look “warm” or “cool” based on when the sun hits them.ĭepending on whether you choose grey decking with lightly-weathered driftwood look or a rich, warm brown, it makes sense to think about your environment and the way the sun hits the area where you’re building your deck. Think of the reds and oranges of fall leaves versus the cool tones of ocean blues. For example, colors with red or orange undertones are warmer than those with blue undertones, which are categorized as cooler colors. If you think back to school, you might recall learning about the warm and cold undertones in colors.

The festival grounds are located on about Reveille Peak Ranch, a location accustomed to large events that may have up to 20,000 people. We needed to be closer to resources and to people.” “We wanted to grow a little bigger, and it was very difficult being so far from all the vendors. “We still wanted to be in the beautiful Hill Country,” he said. Sutherland initially planned to have the festival at a ranch just east of Burnet. Passes for Utopia Fest Down in the Oaks are on sale now.Festival-goers can kick back and relax at interactive art installations spread throughout the festival grounds. This ranch is a portal where people can dream and create… or just sit.” “We want people to come out here and forget their stresses and connect again, unplug from the craziness of society, and truly jump into the energy flow of this place. “Our goal with Down in the Oaks is to rejuvenate souls,” declares Patrick, who demonstrated an Emerson-like appreciation for nature as he led the tour, pointing out ancient trees and sacred clearings. Meanwhile, the Harrison brothers’ vision of sharing their family’s ranch stands in philosophical accord with Sutherland’s Utopia. With no overlapping music, you’ll never have to choose between bands. When I came here, I saw that it was special and had a lot of potential.”Īnother of Utopia’s idyllic principals remains unchanged. I was just looking for a place to transplant Utopia that was a worthy successor to the ranch. “At first, I didn’t look at the move as the beginning of a new chapter. “What attracted me to this place is that, even though it’s closer to Austin, there’s no sign of civilization,” offered Sutherland, who thinks of Utopia as a nature retreat as much as a festival. The plot is stunningly vast one of its four main fields is larger than ACL Fest’s entire footprint. The manicured grounds, which “Playback” explored on a two-and-a-half hour stroll with the Utopia Fest Down in the Oaks team on Sunday, sequenced a variety of natural landscapes: large open fields slated for stages and camping, groves of ancient oak trees providing natural canopies where VIP areas and the silent disco will take place, plus hills, trails, hidden ponds, and a flowing fork of the San Gabriel River. Soon, the pair brought out reinforcements – chainsaws, riding mowers, skid-steer loaders – and cleared out acre upon acre of tall grass, cedar, and lifeless oaks that had been casualties of drought. “It was hard, but we could actually see the progress and that felt good.” “Brandon and I started clearing the area with push mowers,” Dena recalled yesterday as he overlooked one of the property’s seemingly endless fields. The latter was so enchanted by the 100-plus-acre expanse that he left his home town of New York City and a career in orthopedics to help the brothers transform the land into an event space. Getting to the grounds in Burnet County takes just over an hour. The move finds Sutherland partnering with Down in the Oaks Entertainment, a three-man team including homegrown Austinites Patrick and Brandon Harrison, whose family has owned the property since 1936, and their friend Jeff Dena. Sutherland reports that over the last nine years, 70-80% of Utopia Fest attendees originated from Austin. Others christening the new site include roots muse Valerie June, hip-hop pioneer Grandmaster Flash, avant groove pianist John Medeski’s Mad Skillet project, and a bluegrass tribute to Tom Petty, featuring Keller Williams and the Hillbenders. Livetronica heroes STS9, Austin siren Patty Griffin, and soulful scion Lukas Nelson & the Promise of the Real receive top billing. Our data suggests that when it comes to gender equality in the workplace, the cognitive bias known as “the above-average effect” is at play. They also provided the industry they work in. These questions first asked if respondents felt men and women have equal opportunities in most workplaces and then asked them to assess opportunities in their own workplace. We Can’t All Be Above Averageīetween June and September 2019 over 27,000 respondents took PayScale’s salary survey and answered our workplace equity questions. Organizations looking to create true equality for their employees need to holistically examine their compensation, promotion and retention practices. Simply asking employees if they think that women and men are treated equally at their organization is not enough. While the conversation on pay equity has come a long way since our first gender pay gap report, this research suggests that there is still much work to be done. This one demographic group has much more opportunity to directly impact whether their workplace is truly free of gender-based discrimination, yet recognizes workplace discrimination less often. Our data is particularly troubling considering that men, particularly white men, dominate the upper echelons of organizations. When we look at the data by race/ethnicity, this perception gap is even larger. Men agreed at considerably higher rates that men and women have equal opportunities in both their own workplace and in most workplaces. Second, there is a large perception gap between men and women. In other words, respondents more frequently agreed that equal opportunities existed for men and women in their own workplace than in most workplaces. First, people largely aren’t recognizing gender inequality issues in their own workplace, despite recognizing that men and women don’t have equal opportunities in general. In this study, we uncover two major differences in how gender equity is perceived in the workplace. Overall, we see that men and women do not have equal opportunity in the workplace. We have also documented that women, especially women of color, have much lower rates of climbing the corporate ladder than their male counterparts. PayScale has studied the gender pay gap since 2015 and has found persistent differences in men’s and women’s pay. Cockatoos are distinguished by their prominent feather crests, which they can raise and lower at whim. They have zygodactyl feet, which have two toes pointing forward and two toes facing backward, making it easier for them to grab food and objects. Cockatoos have powerful, curved beaks for splitting open seeds and nuts. They are famed for their acrobatic ability and can execute aerial flips and rolls. Some cockatoo species are notable for their powerful screeches and cries that may be heard from long distances.Ĭockatoos are omnivores that eat seeds, fruits, berries, nuts, and insects in the wild. They may survive in captivity for more than 50 years and are one of the longest-living parrot species. They are sociable birds that create close ties with their owners and flock members. Cockatoos are available in a range of hues, including white, black, pink, and yellow. They are distinguished by their unusual feather crests, which they can raise and lower at whim, as well as their intelligence and ability to learn tricks and mimic words and phrases. Cockatoos are classified into 21 species, each with its own set of traits and patterns. This comprehensive genetic assessment of one of Australia’s most charismatic but relatively understudied parrots, the pink cockatoo, has increased our understanding on its evolution, and provided a basis for effective conservation management for this species.Cockatoos are a kind of parrot endemic to Australia and its neighboring islands. These markers can be used to perform ‘provenance testing’, to identify from where birds have been poached, and ‘parentage testing’ to determine whether a bird has been legally captive bred (and not poached from the wild). In addition, we identified a panel of genetic markers suitable for wildlife forensic applications for the pink cockatoo, an important tool to investigate trafficking crimes involving this species. Management of genetic diversity is crucial to minimise inbreeding and to ensure the species has the genetic capacity to evolve to changing environments in the future. Importantly, we found parts of the pink cockatoo range which had lower genetic diversity. However, we found that the genetic differences between the two pink cockatoo subspecies were relatively minor. When gene flow is obstructed, genetic differences accumulate in the isolated groups, which can lead to the formation of different subspecies, and even species. The Eyrean Barrier has likely limited the movement of birds between the two areas, leading to reduced gene flow. This is seen in genetic differences between birds to the east and to the west/north of the ‘Eyrean Barrier’ region, which comprises the Flinders Ranges and Lake Eyre Basin. These genetic data support the presence of two pink cockatoo subspecies, as predicted from their morphology. We were able to generate genetic data from over 50 pink cockatoo specimens held in museum collections throughout Australia, including many from the Australian Museum and the Australian National Wildlife Collection, CSIRO, Canberra. To better understand the evolution of the pink cockatoo and help improve its conservation, we undertook a genetic study of the species across its entire range. The beauty and intelligence of this bird makes it sought after as a pet around the world. The species is also poached from the wild for the illegal wildlife trade. Additionally, the pink cockatoo is under threat in some parts of its range, largely due to the removal of hollow-bearing trees, upon which this species relies for nesting. There has been no genetic research to clarify the two currently recognised subspecies or to determine whether they are evolutionarily distinct. However, in the past, up to four different subspecies have been recognised. These two groups have been recognised as subspecies for over two decades. These two groups differ in their appearance – birds from the eastern group are slightly larger and have a more prominent yellow band in their crest. ‘subspecies’): one in the central/western part of its range ( L. The pink cockatoo is divided into two groups (i.e. Like some other parrot species, they are very long-lived – a captive pink cockatoo from Brookfield Zoo, USA, recently passed away at the age of 82! They eat seeds from a variety of plants, including some exotic agricultural and noxious species, and supplement their diet with insects. Pink cockatoos are found in low densities across the arid and semi-arid inland of Australia, surviving in some of Australia’s harshest habitats. In the 19th century, the " Great Platte River Road"-the valley of the Platte and North Platte Rivers running from Fort Kearny to Fort Laramie- was the principal route of the westward expansion. In 1739, the French traders Pierre and Paul Mallet stayed at the Pani-Maha village near this site while making the first known French voyage to Spanish-ruled Santa Fe. In 1720, Pawnee and Otoe allied with the French massacred the Spanish force led by Pedro de Villasur just south of the present site of Columbus. Though the day is still recognized as Columbus Day at the state and federal level, there have been several campaigns calling for the day to be observed as Indigenous Peoples' Day instead. Throughout the past few years, the holiday observed on the second Monday of October has become a topic of debate. |
